In June, 2003, Barbara’s Bakery of Petaluma, CA became NWRA’s "Centennial Sponsor" in recognition of their financial and in-kind support of the Association’s efforts to build support for the National Wildlife Refuge System on its 100th anniversary. Barbara’s Bakery is a leading manufacturer of 100% natural cereals, cookies, crackers and snacks, offering such well-known brands as Puffins cereals and breakfast bars.

As a Centennial Sponsor, Barbara’s created a new cereal, Organic Wild Puffs, to promote awareness of the National Wildlife Refuge System and the work done by NWRA in support of this national system of lands and waters. Arriving on shelves of natural foods stores in October, Organic Wild Puffs is a lightly sweetened puffed wheat cereal that will appeal to the whole family! The cereal prominently displays the Association’s logo and includes background on the organization’s goals and contact information to learn more.

Barbara’s is also helping the NWRA spread the word to decision-makers about the Refuge System by producing a full-page ad for Roll Call, the leading newspaper covering events on Capitol Hill. Released during Refuge Week (October 12th-18th, 2003), the ad features President Theodore Roosevelt, founder of the Refuge System, enjoying a bowl of Organic Wild Puffs and urging people to celebrate the event.

Barbara’s sponsorship also includes providing snacks, cookies and other products to the NWRA for its numerous refuge "Friends" workshops and other events. In cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, which manages the Refuge System, NWRA conducts regional and national training workshops for members of refuge Friends volunteer organizations.

The Refuge Association is proud to have Barbara’s as its Centennial Sponsor, and appreciates their strong commitment to wildlife conservation in America!
