Located
on the coast of southwestern Alaska, the Kodiak
National Wildlife Refuge provides protection and habitat for animals
such as the Kodiak brown bear, Sitka black-tailed deer, mountain goats,
reindeer and bald eagles and also supports a large, diverse fishery.
The refuge is situated on 1.9 million acres of diverse wetlands, which
range from the Sitka spruce forest to the rolling tundra.
Kodiak NWR was established in 1941 and now encompasses two-thirds of Kodiak Island, Uganik Island, the Red Peaks area on northwestern Afognak Island and all of Ben Island. In addition to being home to more than 2,300 brown bears and at least 600 nesting pairs of bald eagles, Kodiak offers recreational opportunities including hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, photography, rafting and camping.
